Summit Lake - Communities of the Slocan Valley

Summit Lake marks the northern boundaries of the Slocan Valley and Area H of the Regional District of the Central Kootenays. Right on the highway, it is a beautiful small mountain lake, nestled between spectacular mountains.

Appropriately named (it is the highest community on Highway 6 in the valley) Summit Lake is home to the only lift-serviced ski hill in the Valley, and there are a couple of nice campgrounds right on the water, including Summit Lake Provincial Park . The lake and the marsh are the headwaters of Bonanza Creek, which drains into Slocan Lake. In the fall, thousands of western toads emerge from the clear waters and head into the nearby forest to hibernate for the winter.

Summit Lake

The Nakusp range of the Selkirk Mountains rises over 500 metres (1500 feet) above the lake, creating a beautiful backdrop while you swim, fish, and relax. This is an easy access lake and the rainbow and cutthroat trout make this a beautiful spot to spend some time. Add in the possibility of seeing mountain goats on the rocky mountainsides, and other wildlife such as beaver, muskrat, otter, weasel, deer, elk, black bear, grizzly bears, cougar, herons, osprey, bald and grey eagles, hawk, owls, humming birds and the occasional moose and yeti, Summit Lake is a Kootenay experience requiring little sweat while yielding great reward.
